Maid supply from Indonesia may fall short

JAKARTA: Indonesia may not be able to fulfill Malaysia's need for 50,000 domestic helpers as the country's economy improves, making it more attractive for women to work at home rather than seek a living in a foreign land.

Indonesia is also seeking a minimum wage of RM700 for the workers.
Its Labour and Transmigration Minister Muhaimin Iskandar told The Star that he was confident both countries would be able to conclude negotiations on domestic workers at the end of this month but his country would struggle to supply 50,000 domestic helpers when the ban is lifted.

“Interest in working as a domestic worker is starting to decline.
“Based on the information we have received, Malaysia needs 50,000 domestic workers. I am not certain we will be able to meet this demand.
“But we will try our best for those (employers) who meet the standards for salary and (worker) protection. We are looking at a minimum wage of RM700,” Muhaimin said.

At a joint press conference with Muhaimin in Kuala Lumpur in March, Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said the issue of minimum wage was not discussed and would be left to market forces.

Jakarta stopped sending maids to Malaysia in June 2009 following reports of maid abuse.
Migrant worker NGOs also complained of lack of benefits, including a minimum monthly salary.
Negotiations on the MoU include giving maids one day off a week, the right to hold their own passport, monthly salary to be paid through a bank transfer and a joint task force to ensure protection of the workers.

During the two-year moratorium, many workers who could not be sent to Malaysia largely worked in the agricultural sector.
“They (workers) were not diverted (to other countries),” said Muhaimin.
Indonesia is South-East Asia's largest economy and recorded a 6.1% GDP growth rate last year to strengthen its position as one of the emerging market's best performers.
As a result of the ban, the number of Indonesian workers entering Malaysia declined to 154,202 in 2010 from 276,633 in 2009, according to the Indonesian Labour and Transmigration Ministry.

The ban was only for domestic helpers.
Prior to the ban, Malaysia played host to the largest number of Indonesian migrant workers every year.

KUALA LUMPUR: Kira-kira 60,000 majikan di negara ini kini berada dalam keadaan terdesak untuk mendapatkan khidmat pembantu rumah terutama dari negara jiran apabila agensi yang membawa masuk amah ke Malaysia tidak mampu menyediakan perkhidmatan akibat kekurangan amah warga Indonesia.

Mantan Presiden Persatuan Agensi Pembantu Rumah Asing (Papa), Datuk Raja Zulkepley Dahalan berkata, keadaan itu dianggap kritikal kerana amah yang berkhidmat di negara ini tidak mempunyai lapisan baru untuk menggantikan tempat mereka sebaik pulang ke negara asal, berikutan persefahaman di antara Malaysia dan Indonesia masih belum dicapai.
Beliau yang juga Pengarah Agensi Pekerjaan Haz Sdn Bhd berkata, majikan di negara ini lebih memerlukan amah dari Indonesia berikutan bayaran bagi mendapatkan perkhidmatan mereka lebih berpatutan berbanding amah dari negara lain.

Katanya, perjanjian persefahaman iaitu ‘Memorandum Kemasukan Pembantu Rumah Ke Malaysia’ masih belum ditandatangani Malaysia dan Indonesia, menyebabkan bekalan perkhidmatan pembantu rumah dari Indonesia masih dibekukan.

“Kami mahu kerajaan mempercepatkan proses menandatangani memorandum persefahaman antara dua negara terbabit supaya masalah kekurangan amah di negara ini dapat diselesaikan segera,” katanya selepas bertemu dengan lebih 60 agensi pembantu rumah berdaftar bagi membincangkan isu kekurangan pembantu rumah, di sini, semalam.

PUTRAJAYA: Tribunal Tuntutan Pengguna Malaysia (TTPM) di sini semalam memerintahkan sebuah agensi pembantu rumah memulangkan semula RM9,804 kepada seorang kakitangan swasta bagi bayaran mendapatkan pembantu rumah berkualiti melalui agensi itu.

Arahan itu dibuat pada prosiding tuntutan yang dibuat kakitangan swasta itu Chan Yit Wah, 41, kerana tidak berpuas hati dengan pembantu rumah yang disediakan agensi itu dan kegagalan agensi itu mengantikan pembantu rumah yang dipulangkan semula kepada agensi itu.
Presiden TTPM, Mohd Nasrim Datuk Mohd Salleh mengarahkan agensi A-P Maju Jaya Enterprise beralamat di Kuala Lumpur memulangkan keseluruhan jumlah bayaran yang dituntut oleh Chan dalam tempoh 14 selepas perintah diberikan.

Bagaimanapun, agensi berkenaan tidak menghantar sebarang wakil untuk menghadiri prosiding berkenaan.

Chan ketika ditemui selepas prosiding berkata, dia berpuas hati kerana tuntutannya diterima dan berharap kes ini diselesaikan. “Malah, tindakan ini diharap dapat memberi pengajaran kepada orang lain supaya lebih berani bertindak bagi menuntut hak mereka sebagai pengguna”.
Menurutnya, selepas dua kali bertukar pembantu rumah akibat pelbagai masalah, agensi pembantu rumah yang bertanggungjawab membekalkan perkhidmatan itu masih gagal menyediakan pembantu rumah berkualiti seperti dijanjikan.

Beliau berkata, dia membuat tuntutan kepada TTPM bagi menuntut semula kos yang sudah dikeluarkan untuk mendapatkan pembantu rumah daripada agensi itu.

Dia berkata, pembantu rumah pertama yang diambil daripada A-P Maju Jaya Enterprise hanya bertahan selama 11 hari, manakala pembantu rumah kedua hanya sempat bekerja selama empat hari.

KUALA LUMPUR: “Jangan terpesona dan terlalu ghairah dengan tawaran pembantu rumah murah ditawarkan ejen sebab memang jelas akan ada unsur penipuan,” kata Presiden Persatuan Agensi Pembantu Rumah Asing (Papa), Alwi Bavutty.

Beliau berkata, pihaknya mendapat maklumat mengenai kewujudan banyak ejen pembantu rumah haram akhir-akhir ini terutama selepas isu pembekuan penghantaran pembantu rumah Indonesia ke Malaysia yang hingga kini belum mendapat kata putus antara kedua negara.
Menurutnya, anggaran kekurangan pembantu rumah iaitu kira-kira 3,000 orang sebulan untuk majikan negara ini menyebabkan ejen haram mengambil kesempatan.

Alwi berkata, ejen haram dan pembelit dengan kata-kata manis itu akan melakukan pelbagai cara untuk menjerat majikan yang terdesak mendapatkan pembantu rumah.
“Keadaan sekarang (keperluan pembantu rumah) agak mendesak. Nak tunggu dari Indonesia biasanya terlalu lama, amah Filipina mahal manakala amah dari Kemboja pula mempunyai masalah bahasa dan kekurangan kemahiran.

“Jalan mudah majikan ambil pembantu rumah daripada ejen yang tidak berdaftar. Biasanya maklumat mengenainya mereka dapat daripada mulut ke mulut dengan kos pengambilan sekitar RM3,000.

“Tetapi saya rasa ejen haram tumbuh bagai cendawan bergerak sendiri bukan sindiket terancang. Apapun pihak persatuan harap perancangan pertemuan antara Kementerian Dalam Negeri dengan agensi kerajaan Indonesia dijangka bulan ini dapat segera mencapai kata sepakat,” katanya.

Ditanya berkenaan ada ejen haram sanggup mengugut memenggal kepala pembantu rumah jika tidak mahu melarikan diri selepas berkhidmat dengan majikan dalam tempoh tertentu, Alwi berkata perkara itu serius kerana sudah membabitkan ugutan jenayah.

“Ini dikira masuk bab jenayah. Pembantu rumah harus segera melaporkan kepada majikan sebelum makluman polis,” katanya.

Harian Metro semalam mendedahkan pengakuan tujuh majikan di sebuah perumahan elit di Taman Melawati di sini yang tertipu apabila semua amah didakwa dari Sabah dan dibekalkan sepasang suami isteri ghaib serentak.

Katanya, mustahil agensi yang berdaftar melakukan perkara sedemikian memandangkan tindakan yang boleh diambil terhadap mereka agak berat termasuk digantung lesen.
“Tambahan pula, pengambilan pembantu rumah dari Indonesia sudah dibekukan sejak Jun 2009, jika perkara itu berlaku ia mungkin dilakukan oleh agensi haram yang ingin mengaut keuntungan mudah.

“Apabila pengambilan sudah dibekukan, pastinya pembantu rumah warga asing itu tidak mempunyai permit bekerja di sini dan ada kemungkinan mereka menggunakan pas lawatan sosial.

“Justeru, saya ingatkan kepada majikan agar segera membuat laporan polis dan melaporkannya kepada Jabatan Imigresen supaya tindakan segera dapat diambil terhadap agensi terbabit. “Ini perkara serius, jika tidak laporkan, masalah ini akan berleluasa dan merugikan majikan sendiri,” katanya ketika dihubungi di sini, semalam.

Harian Metro semalam melaporkan mengenai segelintir agensi pembantu rumah asing di negara ini dikesan mengaut keuntungan sehingga berlipat kali ganda daripada seorang pembantu rumah dengan meminta mereka melarikan diri selepas bekerja antara dua hingga tiga bulan dengan sesebuah majikan dan Menggunakan taktik kitar semula berkenaan, selepas pembantu rumah melarikan diri, agensi terbabit akan menghantar pembantu rumah sama kepada majikan lain, dan sekali lagi meraih sehingga RM8,000 bagi setiap pembantu rumah. Malah, ada juga agensi pembantu rumah asing yang tidak melengkapkan dokumen yang diperlukan termasuk permit masuk dan pemeriksaan kesihatan, sebelum menyerahkan kepada majikan walaupun mereka membayar ribuan ringgit.

Alwi berkata, agensi yang berdaftar akan melengkapkan semua dokumen seperti permit masuk dan pemeriksaan kesihatan, barulah boleh menyerahkan kepada majikan.
Menurutnya, majikan juga dinasihatkan supaya menyemak terlebih dulu dengan Jabatan Imigresen.

PUTRAJAYA: Segelintir majikan yang semakin terdesak dikesan lebih ‘selesa’ menggunakan pembantu rumah tanpa permit selepas mendapati pihak berkuasa berkaitan semakin jarang melakukan operasi di kawasan perumahan tempat mereka bekerja.
Malah, pembantu rumah terbabit dikatakan semakin berani melakukan kerja ‘part time’ di rumah majikan lain di kawasan sama bagi mendapatkan hasil lebih lumayan kerana yakin kawasan perumahan tempat mereka bekerja tidak akan diserbu pihak berkuasa kerana dilengkapi dengan pengawal keselamatan.

Setiausaha Agung Persatuan Pengguna Islam Malaysia (PPIM), Datuk Dr Maamor Osman mengakui kewujudan senario majikan yang semakin cenderung menggunakan pembantu rumah tanpa permit yang lebih mudah dan murah.

Beliau berkata, kegiatan itu berlaku disebabkan kurangnya penguatkuasaan Jabatan Imigresen di kawasan perumahan elit, termasuk yang dilengkapi dengan kawalan keselamatan 24 jam.
“Memang saya akui kegiatan menggunakan pembantu rumah tanpa permit semakin menjadi ‘trend’ sejak kebelakangan ini kerana selain mudah, ia juga murah.

“Bukan itu saja, walaupun majikan menyedari akan dikenakan tindakan tegas jika ditahan menggunakan pembantu rumah tanpa permit, tetapi ia bukan halangan kerana penguatkuasaan imigresen yang tidak menyeluruh,” katanya kepada Harian Metro, semalam. Dr Maamor berkata, imigresen memiliki pelbagai undang-undang membabitkan, tetapi kebanyakan majikan tidak mematuhi peraturan itu, malah ia semakin berleluasa apabila mereka juga tidak gentar untuk menggunakan pembantu rumah tanpa permit.

Malah, katanya, ada majikan mengambil kesempatan untuk mendapatkan keuntungan dengan mengagihkan pembantu rumah itu untuk digunakan bagi membasuh kain dan melakukan kerja berat lain oleh anak mereka yang tinggal di tempat lain.

“Ada anak majikan yang tinggal di tempat lain sanggup membawa pakaian kotor untuk dibasuh pembantu rumah di rumah ibu bapa mereka.
“Saya melihat ia bukan saja melanggar perjanjian di antara majikan dan pembantu rumah, tetapi ia seolah-olah cuba menganiaya,” katanya.

When I was in my twenties, I stood in a hospital corridor waiting for doctors to put a few stitches in my daughter's head and I asked,'When do you stop worrying?' The nurse said,'When they get out of the accident stage..'.

When I was in my thirties, I sat on a little chair in a classroom and heard how one of my children talked incessantly, disrupted the class,and was headed for a career making license plates. As if to read my mind, a teacher said,'Don't worry, they all go through this stage and then you can sit back, relax and enjoy them.'

When I was in my forties, I spent a lifetime waiting for the phone to ring, the cars to come home, the front door to open. A friend said,'They're trying to find themselves.'Don't worry! In a few years, they'll be adults.' They'll be off on their own, they'll be out of your hair'

My friends said that when I became a grandparent that I would get to enjoythe happy little voices yelling Grandma! Papa! But now I find that I worry just as much about the little kids as the big ones. How can anyone cope with all this Worry?

Can it be that parents are sentenced to a lifetime of worry? Is concern for one another handed down like a torch to blaze the trail of human frailties and the fears of the unknown? Is concern a curse or is it a virtue that elevates us to the highest form of earthly creation?

Recently, one of my own children became quite irritable, saying to me,'Where were you? I've been calling for 3 days, and no one answered. I was worried.'
I smiled a warm smile.
The torch has been passed.

Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA News) - Presiden Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono menaruh perhatian besar terhadap perlindungan TKI yang disiksa dengan menelpon langsung seorang pembantu keturunan Pacitan, Jawa Timur, saat dikunjungi oleh Dubes RI untuk Malaysia Da`i Bachtiar.

"Bapak presiden punya perhatian besar terhadap TKI bermasalah di luar negeri. Ia menelpon langsung seorang pembantu yang disiksa dan diperkosa di Penang untuk memberikan dukungan moril," kata Dubes Da`i Bachtiar usai mengunjungi korban di rumah sakit umum Pulau Penang, Minggu sore.

Presiden juga telah memberikan instruksi kepada KBRI Kuala Lumpur dan KJRI Penang untuk memberikan advokasi maksimal kepada TKW yang bermasalah atau menerima siksaan dari majikan.

Mantan Kapolri Da`i Bachtiar didampingi Konjen Penang Chilman Arisman, minister counsellor konsuler KBRI Amirudin Padjaitan dan minister counsellor Pensosbud Widyarka Ryananta langsung mengunjungi korban di rumah sakit Penang setelah media massa Malaysia memberitakan seorang PRT Indonesia disiksa parah dan diperkosa oleh majikannya.

Menurut Kepala polisi Georgetown, Gan Kong Meng, pembantu rumah (PRT) asal Lampung WF itu telah disiksa dan diperkosa oleh majikannya. WF (26 Thn) mengaku dipukul kepalanya, tangan dan kakinya dengan ikat pinggang (gesper) hingga cedera parah, dadanya disterika, punggungnya disiram air panas, bahkan beberapa kali diperkosa oleh majikan laki-lakinya.

Hasil pemeriksaan rumah sakit menunjukkan adanya luka-luka di kemaluan korban diduga akibat pemerkosaan. Majikan perempuan, kata korban, ikut memukuli jika pembantunya tidak melayani majikan laki-laki yang profesinya sebagai kontraktor pemotongan rumput.

Dalam kondisi luka parah, majikannya yang beretnis Malaysia etnis India membuang WF di Taman Cenderawasih, Nibong Tebal. WF terkapar selama 12 jam di pinggir jalan hingga seorang pejalan kaki menemukan dan membawanya ke kantor polisi.

Kepolisian Penang kemudian mengusut penyiksaan ini selama seminggu. Korban awalnya sempat tidak tahu dimana alamat majikannya karena keluar rumah dengan mata tertutup. Namun berkat kegigihan kepolisian Penang, kedua majikan WF akhirnya dapat ditangkap, Sabtu. Kedua majikan WF kini dalam tahanan kepolisian Penang.

Da`i Bachtiar mengucapkan terima kasih dan memberikan apresiasi tinggi kepada kepala kepolisian Penang yang telah berhasil menangkap kedua majikan WF.

"Saya minta majikan saya dihukum seberat penderitaan saya," kata WF kepada Dubes. Ia khawatir suami dan keluarga di kampung tidak mau menerima dia karena luka yang parah. Hampir seluruh punggungnya terkena luka bakar akibat disiram air panas dan dadanya juga mengalami luka bakar akibat distrika majikan perempuan.

Dubes juga memberikan uang santunan sebesar 2.000 Ringgit (Rp5,5 juta) kepada WF.

GEORGE TOWN: An Indonesian maid has claimed that she was abused by a couple and forced into a threesome sex romp with them.

Her four-month ordeal ended when the couple felt they had had enough of her and chucked her by a roadside at Taman Cenderawasih in Nibong Tebal last Sunday, with RM30 to fend for herself.

She wandered around aimlessly for 12 hours before a good Samaritan took her to a police station in town the following day.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said the victim, who looked traumatised and skinny, had burn and scald marks on her back and chest.

She is being treated at the Penang Hospital for multiple bruises.

A medical inspection showed there were tears in her private parts, ACP Gan said at a press conference at the Patani Road police station here yesterday.

The 26-year-old maid from East Java claimed she was raped several times by her employer, a grass-cutting contractor, while his wife would beat her up if she did not give in to her husband’s sexual demands.

ACP Gan said the victim claimed the couple, aged 41 and 36, used a belt to hit her on the head, hands and legs. She also alleged that she was splashed with hot water and had her chest burnt with an iron.

The maid said she started working for the couple in February at their apartment in Jelutong here but the abuses only began in May.

ACP Gan said police arrested the couple at 9.15pm on Friday after five days of trying to locate their apartment as the victim was not familiar with the area.

“We had to take many pictures of apartments in Jelutong to show her. Once the apartment was identified, we asked around the neighbourhood before the suspects were nabbed,” he said.

The Indonesian consulate here has been informed of the case.

ACP Gan said the husband had three previous convictions for drug and criminal offences.

Police also seized a car belonging to the man as well as an iron, a belt, a comforter and a bedsheet from the apartment. The couple has four children aged five to 15.

Maid into slaves

MOST Malaysians would be shocked at the idea that slavery is still alive and well in this country in this day and age. Those who can afford to hire live-in maids to mind their children, cook their food, clean their homes, iron their clothes and wash their cars would take great offence at charges that they treat their servants like slaves, when they come willingly, are paid a wage, and are not beaten, burnt, or clapped in chains. In part this is because the word conjures up old images of cotton-picking, market auctions, bull whips and manacles.

But this is not the stuff of modern-day servitude. And neither is it confined to the selling of women and children to brothels. There are many forms of human trafficking -- the term more commonly used to describe human bondage in its contemporary incarnation -- and its defining characteristic is not the ownership of people as chattel to be traded as in the past but the inhumanity of the indignities imposed on another human being.

While maids in this country may not literally be under lock and key, they are virtually in chains as they are not free to come and go -- their passports are in the hands of their employers or somebody else. By any definition, this is slavery, and so are the gruelling hours, with few breaks and no days of rest, which the maids work. This is a gross violation of their rights as workers and a grave affront to their dignity as human beings.

Like it or not, we have to confront the uncomfortable reality that foreign maids may be living in bondage in our homes or next door. We can no longer ignore the exploitation of this underclass of domestic helpers who have been keeping our homes well-run. And as long as there is a darker side to the best of people, we cannot leave their fate to the milk of human kindness.

Fortunately, there is now a letter of intent between Malaysia and Indonesia to let the maids keep their passports and to provide them with days off. The challenge now is to find common ground on the outstanding issues of fair wages and recruiting fees. While it is vital for Malaysia to provide legal protection to maids, it is equally important for Indonesia to exercise more control over the practices of the recruiting agencies and the training they conduct.

Above all, what is required is political will and fresh political direction to navigate the frenetic and fractious cross-border debate on immigration.

Importing maids, exporting talents

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono signed a memorandum of understanding Tuesday (18 May) on the new terms of the maids’ employment, including giving them a day off a week and allowing them to keep their passports.

It is understood that Indonesia has suggested a minimum wage of RM600 for maids but it requires further discussions.

Several high-profile abuse cases have created great discussions over the welfare of Indonesian maids. Also, the Indonesian government has earlier imposed a freeze on sending maids to Malaysia since they are not receiving fair treatment here. On the other hand, cases involving Indonesian maids, including runaways, stealth and abuse of children can also be heard from time to time.

Based on the information, we have some 300,000 legal and illegal Indonesian maids and most of them are responsible for housework and taking care of children, elders and patients. They are actually contributing a lot to our society. Unfortunately, some employers treat them as slaves and as a result, a lot of complaints are made.

It is a fact that Malaysia does not pay high for maids. To be fair, allowing maids, who belong to the vulnerable groups in the society, to enjoy a minimum wage, a day-off a week and a better working environment is just meeting the minimum international labour standards, there should be no controversy at all.

However, some employers are concerned that whether they have neglected the welfare of employers while making an agreement to protect the basic welfare of maids. For example, who should be responsible for the losses if the maid runs away?

Maids run away with various strange reasons, and it is not necessarily because they have been abused or treated unfairly. A friend of mine treated her maids like friends but the first two of her maids ran away with their boyfriends. She got the third maid but found that the maid was suffering from venereal disease and it caused endless worries to her family.

Every time when she applied for a maid, my friend paid the maid advanced salary. Together with agency and visa fees, she had to spend about RM7000 for a maid. She really suffered a great loss as three of the maids were not satisfactory.

In the long run, the memorandum of understanding signed by Malaysian and Indonesia can help us solve the maid dispute. It is a good thing. But the market is realistic. When the welfare and treatment for maids have been improved, their quality must be improved, too. The market may also shift to other countries for cheaper maids.

Another problem that we should think about is, why are we losing millions of talents at the same time when we are importing up to 2 millions of Indonesian labours and maids?

KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysian employers and their Indonesian maids can still negotiate the requirement for an off day a week and come up with mutually-agreed arrangement, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.He said if both sides agreed, the maids need not take an off day and they would be paid salary in lieu of the off day."If we have concerns, we can still negotiate," he told reporters after opening the ground breaking ceremony of Utusan Melayu (M) Berhad's new headquarters at Jalan Chan Sow Lin, here on Thursday.

Najib said this when asked to comment on concerns that the one-day off for maid could give rise to social problem."There should be a compromise or else how are we going to have the supply of maid?" he said.On Tuesday, Malaysia and Indonesia signed a letter of intent, which requires Malaysian employers to give their Indonesian maids a day off a week and that if the maids agreed not to take the off day, they would be paid salaries instead.

Najib said Malaysian families were increasingly in need of maid especially if the husband and wife were working.Asked whether the setting up of more nurseries could help ease the demand for maid among working couples, Najib said it was likely that these couples would still need the service of a maid.-- BERNAMA

GEORGE TOWN: The freeze on the supply of Indonesian maids to Malaysia is expected to be lifted this month.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam is hopeful a meeting with Indonesia this month will resolve the issue. He said Malaysians could hire Indonesian maids when their salary packages were finalised."Our aim is to reduce the salaries Malaysians have to pay for the maids.

We have held two meetings with them and hope to reach an amicable solution soon," Dr Subramaniam said.Indonesian maids account for 80 per cent of the 280,000 foreign domestic helpers in the country. They receive a salary of between RM500 and RM600 a month.Indonesia stopped the supply of maids to Malaysia in June last year in a move to obtain higher pay for them.

Subramaniam was speaking after attending the opening of the state MIC service centre at Jalan Datuk Keramat and the launch of the state MIC website here yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - – Indonesian maids working in Malaysia will be given one day off a week and be allowed to hold onto their passports, the home ministry said Thursday, in a new deal triggered by a string of abuse case.

Indonesia imposed a ban on sending maids to work here in June, after a 43-year-old Malaysian woman was charged with causing grievous bodily harm by beating her Indonesian maid and scalding her with boiling water.

Malaysia's Home Ministry said in a statement that the new terms were agreed by senior Malaysian and Indonesian officials who met in August."The meeting has agreed that Indonesian maids will be allowed to keep their passport when they are working in this country," it said.

Currently, employers typically hold onto maids' passports, to prevent them running away or to exercise control over them."The Indonesian maids also will be given one day off a week," it added.The ministry said the committee thrashing out the new working conditions will hold a fourth meeting in Jakarta this Saturday, which will tackle the hotly debated topic of maids' wages.

The issue of wages has remained unresolved despite talks that have been held intermittently since 2007.Malaysia -- one of Asia's largest importers of labour -- depends heavily on domestic workers, mainly from Indonesia, but has no laws governing their working conditions.

The government in May announced plans for new laws to protect domestic workers from sexual harassment, non-payment of wages and poor working conditions. Currently Indonesian maids typically work seven days a week for as little as 400 ringgit (113 dollars).

PUTRAJAYA, June 17 (Bernama) -- Employers holding on to the passport of their foreign maids must surrender the travel document if requested by the maids.Failure to surrender the passport on the request will result in a RM10,000 fine under amendments to the Employment Act 1955.

Human Resource Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, in announcing this here today, however, said foreign maids could only request for their passport, which was kept for security and other legitimate reasons, to be used for official use like the renewal of their visa."If the maid wants to leave and requests for the passport, it should be handed to her.

The amendments also put the onus on the employer to ensure that the visa of the domestic helper is renewed on time."If the visa is not renewed, then the employer is also liable to a fine," he told a press conference after meeting the Indian Human Resource Development Minister, Kapil Sibal, at a leading hotel here.Tuesday, Dr Subramaniam announced that under the amendments to the Employment Act, all foreign maids would be entitled to one day leave a week."We discussed with a lot of people before making this change. It is not something new as it is already in our Employment Act.

Only maids, except those from the Philippines, have been exempted from this ruling."The off day may not necessarily be a Sunday or a public holiday. It can be mutually agreed upon by the maid and the employer. This move was requested not only by the government but also workers' representatives and non-governmental organisations," he said.Dr Subramaniam said employers, with the mutual consent of their maids, could also compensate them if they were not given leave.The ministry, he said, would provide a booklet to each foreign maid entering the country, containing all important information including their rights and legal recourse in case of any problem in their employment."If there is a breach of contract by the employer, then the maid with the aid of the booklet will be able to lodge a report with the relevant authority," he said.

Meanwhile, he said the government had yet to decide whether to allow maids from China to work in Malaysia."Initially, when we looked at this, it received opposition from several quarters of the Chinese community, but now we don't know if the situation has changed," he added.

SEREMBAN: Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam has confirmed that Indonesia is demanding a RM800 minimum salary for its domestic maids, saying that it is under “pressure” to do so from the republic’s local media.

Dr Subramaniam said the Indonesian government had little choice but to do so following reports by its media of so-called rampant abuse of maids by Malaysian employers.
He said the RM800 wage demand was discussed during a meeting between ministry officials and their Indonesian counterparts in Putrajaya two weeks ago.
“We told them that this is not fair as 99.9% of the 280,000 Indonesian maids here are treated well.
“Only 0.1% may be ill-treated or not have their salaries paid but they (the Indonesian government) are being pressured by their media,” he said here Saturday.
Indonesian maids in the country are now being paid an average of between RM450 and RM600 monthly.

Asked if he thought the amount was high, Subramaniam said the ministry would wait for the outcome of the next meeting in Jakarta.
“I do not want to pre-empt it. I have told my officers what they should do. Let us wait and see if this is agreed to by our Indonesian counterparts,” he said.

Dr Subramaniam was responding to reports quoting Indonesian ambassador to Malaysia Da’i Bachtiar as saying that Jakarta would be making the higher wage demand in its negotiations.
Asked if his ministry had contingency plans in case Jakarta refused to budge, Dr Subramaniam said Malaysian employers could source their domestic maids from other countries.
“We should also stop relying on foreign maids. It is high time we become self-reliant.
“We allow employers to bring in maids from Cambodia, Laos, Sri Lanka and the Philippines. “We have also thought about China but there have been some debate here if this should be allowed,” he said.

Dr Subramaniam said it was also a known fact that when the government of a source country had asked for exorbitant wages for their maids, the demand from Malaysians would fall.
“We used to have more than 10,000 maids from the Philippines previously. The number has since fallen to 8,000. Malaysians have a choice where they wish to get their maids from,” he added.

Oleh itu al-Imam al-Qurtubi r.h berkata: Disebabkan semua amal perbuatanyang ada ini dapat dimasuki unsur riak, sedangkan puasa itu hanya dilakukan semata-mata kerana Allah, tidak hairanlah Allah menisbbahkan puasa itu kepada diri-Nya”

FOR every Siti Hajar, there are many others who suffer in silence, their stories untold. If you thought that maid abuse is a rare case in our supposedly genteel society, think again — it’s more rampant than you think.

Think cheating employers who shortchange their maids and deny them wages. Think employers who bring out the cane and beat their maids black and blue. Think employers who rape their maids and make them bear their children.

It's a horror story that not many will want to hear but this is the true picture of how sick Malaysians can be.
Second secretary (consular affairs) at the Indonesian Embassy in Malaysia, Susapto Anggoro Broto, has seen and heard it all at the embassy's shelter, located behind the embassy’s building on Jalan Tun Razak.

Susapto said a Taskforce for Services and Protection of Indonesians was formed in 2007 to deal with problems faced by their nationals. For these cases, the process of settling them can be quite lengthy as the women will be required to help in police investigations and to attend court hearings. The shelter then becomes their temporary home.

HELPING THEMSELVES: Women at the Indonesian Embassy’s shelter make their own meals daily. Currently there are 162 in a shelter bulit to accommodate 75. They have to make do.

“Many ran away and came to us for help but I'm sure that all the cases we have here are just the tip of the iceberg.
“There are many more who continue to suffer because they were unable to escape,” he said.
Susapto said Malaysia received the most complaints for being terrible employers compared with countries like Taiwan, Hong Kong or Singapore. "

No more small talk, arrest and hold them till the case is done

Is it any wonder Malaysians have nothing to say about this. I am absolutely horrified to learn of this state of affairs and Malaysian attitude towards the maids. I have seen maids being provided rooms, if they are lucky enough to have one, with no windows and ventilation. I was shocked to view a few houses in such state, when looking for a home to buy.

No human should be treated in such manner, by another.When one is employed one pays for their skills and time and ability to do a task. Their dignity, respect, honour, body and mental well being are not part of the payment.They are areas to be respected by another individual.
I feel so sad that Malaysian society has been lowered itself so much, and have lost the respect for another individual, simply because they think they pay their wages, they own them, and can abuse them to one heart's delight.Very wrong thinking. Disgusting ....is all I can think...to treat another human being in such a manner.

JAKARTA: Indonesia may temporarily stop sending domestic helpers to Malaysia after an Indonesian maid was recently reported to have been tortured, Indonesia's Antara news agency reported.

"We will likely stop it (dispatch of domestic helpers) temporarily. But we will first invite relevant ministers and parties to a meeting on June 23 to make a preliminary evaluation," Antara quoted Manpower and Transmigration Minister Erman Suparno as saying here on Thursday.
Among those to be invited to the meeting were the state minister for women's empowerment, the foreign minister, the law and human rights minister, the home affairs minister, the national police chief and the Indonesian ambassador to Malaysia as well as Malaysian representatives, he said.

As the decision to be taken at the meeting would have a systemic impact, his ministry could not decide on the dispatch of domestic helpers on its own without the input from other parties, he said. "But I want it (the dispatch of domestic helpers) stopped until there is a response from the Malaysian government on protection of Indonesian migrant workers there," he said.
The plan to temporarily stop the dispatch of domestic helpers was the government's response to a myriad of problems being faced by Indonesian workers in Malaysia.

One of the latest of such problems arose from an incident befalling domestic helper Siti Hajar who came from Limbangan, Garut, West Java.
Suparno had earlier said delegations from the two countries were scheduled to hold talks on July 15 to discuss various problems facing Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia.
At the meeting, the Indonesian delegation would propose reviewing several clauses in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the manpower field both sides signed early this year. The clauses, among others, relate to protection of Indonesian migrant workers and their rights as well as improvement of their salaries.

"If no agreement on the protection of Indonesian migrant workers is reached, we will consider putting a temporary stop to the dispatch of domestic helpers," the minister said.

He said he discussed the protection of migrant workers with Malaysian Minister of Human Resources Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam early this month when they attended the 98th International Labour Conference in Geneva. - Bernama

Persyaratan membuat perjanjian kerja bagi TKI yang mengganti paspor

Perjanjian kerja (employment contract) merupakan dokumen penting untuk melindungi hak-hak pekerja. Jika terjadi perselisihan hubungan kerja antara pekerja dan majikan maka perjanjian kerja (PK) menjadi rujukan untuk penyelesaian masalah.

Sesuai dengan ketentuan UU 39 tahun 2004 tentang penempatan dan perlindungan TKI di luar negeri, setiap TKI di luar negeri wajib menandatangani PK. Isi PK antara lain mengatur hak dan kewajiban TKI serta majikan, kondisi dan syarat kerja (upah,fasilitas/tunjangan, jam kerja), serta jangka waktu kontrak.

TKI yang akan memperpanjang kontrak juga diwajibkan menandatangani PK baru dengan majikannya yang diendors oleh KBRI/KJRI.
Disamping menandatangani PK, setiap majikan di Malaysia juga wajib mengasuransikan TKI sesuai dengan skim pampasan pekerja (workmen compensation) 1955.
Di lapangan, ketentuan pembuatan PK dan pengasuransian TKI ini masih perlu dikontrol pelaksanaannya. Jika tidak, hal itu akan merugikan TKI karena bisa terjadi TKI memperpanjang kontrak tanpa dilindungi dengan PK dan asuransi.

Guna mencegah resiko seperti itu, KBRI Kuala Lumpur mulai mempersyaratkan setiap TKI dan majikan yang akan memperpanjang kontrak, wajib menandatangani PK perpanjangan dan mengasuransikan TKI. Persyaratan itu dikenakan pada saat TKI memproses penggantian paspor di KBRI. Seperti diketahui, paspor TKI berlaku 3 tahun sehingga jika TKI memperpanjang kontrak maka ia perlu memperbaharui dan mengganti paspor.

Saat ini, KBRI sedang mengsosialisasikan ketentuan yang akan berlaku 2 Maret 2009 tersebut kepada semua majikan dan agensi pekerjaan. KBRI juga menyiapkan formulir PK standard bagi TKI dan majikan yang belum memiliki. TKI dan majikan sekaligus dapat menandatangani PK di KBRI.

- Housemaid basic salary has officially been marked at minimum of RM500 regardless of the job scope. This has been made known to the maid during PAP (Persediaan Akhir Penerbangan) by DEPNAKER.

- Salary deduction has been reduce from 5 months to 3 months. The salary deduction is based on RM450 / month. The balance RM50 to be given to the maid for the first 3 months. The total payment to WSC remain RM5,250. I have been made to understand that Indonesia Govt will send delegates to Malaysia to discuss on possibilities of waiving salary deduction in future.

- Recruitment charges has been increased to RM3900 since the charges imposed by Indonesian Agent has increased to RM4500/ biodata. Our supplier is a licensed agency in Indonesia. We do not recruit housemaids from freelance agents or direct from sponsors.

KTKLN, Kartu Multi Manfaat Untuk TKI

(Kudus, BNP2TKI) Pemerintah selangkah lagi lebih maju dalam menciptakan instrumen pengamanan dalam penempatan TKI, yaitu dengan dikeluarkannya Kartu Tenaga Kerja Luar Negeri (KTKLN), yang berbentuk seperti seperti kartu kredit.
“Dalam kartu ini tersimpan microchip yang menyimpan database TKI, seperti asuransi, nama PPTKIS, daerah asal TKI, masa kontrak kerja di luar negeri, dan data segudang lainnya,” jelas Kepala BNP2TKI Moh Jumhur Hidayat dalam acara buka puasa bersama dengan keluarga besar PT Pura Baru Utama, di Kudus, Jateng, Senin (15/9).

Menurut Jumhur, KTKLN ini lebih canggih dari Kartu Tanda Penduduk (KTP) namun fungsinya masih bisa dikembangkan lebih banyak, dengan bekerjasama dengan pihak ketiga seperti perbankan, asuransi, penerbangan, dan lainnya.

“Jadi kalau Anda mau jadi TKI, apakah TKI mandiri, TKI informal atau TKI formal, miliki segera KTKLN. Kartu ini gratis namun punya multi manfat buat di dalam negeri maupun di luar negeri,” ucap Kepala BNP2TKI itu. (zul)

MORE people in Penang are opting to hire maids by the hour since the fees for full-time ones skyrocketed.

Housewife Quah Lean Hong, 49, said she used to have a full-time maid for five years.

“However, when the maid returned to Indonesia in July last year, we decided that a cheaper option was to hire a part-time maid.

“We arrange for her to come in every Saturday since she’s already familiar with our house and general cleaning chores,” said the mother of three.

Quah said she was now paying the agent RM40 for four hours per visit, adding that she would hire the maid for a whole day (eight hours) for spring-cleaning before Chinese New Year.

Retired restaurant operator Rebecca Tan, 56, also said an hourly-paid maid was a wiser alternative as it was simply too costly to hire a full-time housemaid nowadays.

“Although my agent has increased the charge for four-hour maid service from RM40 to RM42, I don't mind paying the extra money.

“When I was running the restaurant years ago, I had a full-time maid to help me out. However, I had to bring with me everywhere. I also had to buy food, clothes and other necessities for her,” added the grandmother who is staying in an apartment in Island Park.

Last week, Association of Foreign Housemaids Agencies (Papa) president Datuk Raja Zulkepley Dahalan warned that employers might soon have to fork out up to RM8,000 to hire an Indonesian maid.
Maid agencies currently charge RM7,500 for each maid brought in from Indonesia compa-red with the RM6,000 fee charged early last year.

Businessman Desmond Fernandez said he paid about RM4,000 for a housemaid in 2000.

“Although she’s not perfect, I have learnt to live with her faults. I can’t afford to hire a new one these days,” he said.

An agent who wanted to be identified as Lim said she had been supplying part-time maids for nine years and she paid more than RM9,000 to hire Indonesian maids from the agents there.

“The ones benefiting from the fee increase are the agents. They take advantage of not only their customers but also of Indonesians seeking a better life in Malaysia,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesia will propose amended terms for the recruitment of its domestic helpers, who form the largest number of foreign maids in the country.

Topping the list will be higher wages and time off for them. A proper mechanism will also be sought to resolve disputes between the helpers and their employers.

The amendments to a labour memorandum of understanding signed between both countries in 2006 involving domestic helpers will be presented at a coming consultation between both sides that Malaysia will host.

The Indonesians wanted to set a minimum wage of RM500 for their domestic helpers then, but agreed to back down after this condition was rejected by Malaysia.

Indonesian domestic helpers, who number about 300,000 here, are mostly being paid between RM400 and RM500 monthly.

An Indonesian embassy official said the latest wage increase being sought would likely be between RM50 and RM100.

Indonesian ambassador to Malaysia Da’i Bachtiar, who confirmed the amendments, said the rising cost of living had also affected Indonesians working in Malaysia.

“If costs are rising here due to higher fuel prices and food prices are going up, then our workers too should be entitled to what is deemed fit by the Malaysian Government,” he told The Star in an interview.

Bachtiar, the republic's former national police chief who was posted here in May, said time off was also being sought.

“We also want a system in place whereby if an employer accuses workers of any wrongdoing the issue will be handled with fairness,” he added.

On the high fees being paid to agents by employers seeking Indonesian domestic helpers, despite Malaysia capping recruiting and processing fees for such workers at RM2, 415 in 2006, Bachtiar said he agreed that Indonesian agents were “asking too much.”

He said many Indonesian agents also did not train domestic helpers for the chores they were expected to do here.

“What I am going to do to such agents is to get Jakarta to blacklist them. We will ask Malaysian agents for feedback as to who the errant agents on our side are. We will pass this information to the authorities in Jakarta,” he added.

"PEMBERSIHAN KORUPSI"

I received a call from my Indonesian Counterpart today informing that the Indonesian Immigration Department is undergoing "PEMBERSIHAN KORUPSI" program...NOT sure what transpired during this time but definitely the exercise will slow down the whole process of new passport application.

Insyallah if time permits and with the availability of some info, I will draw the step by step processes (at Indonesian side) so that all of you will understand better what contributes to the delay of obtaining housemaid biodata..etc. Same thing goes to the housemaid arrival.

I'm taking this opportunity to inform that the process of recruiting new housemaid will slow down a bit, now that the holy month of Ramadhan is fast approaching, hence, Tenaga Kerja Wanita (TKW)will prefer to register after Syawal. Furthermore, if you are urgently in need of a housemaid, August is such a "bad timing" to ask for one. Experience showed that the demand for housemaid will be at its peak during :

- 1 month before Ramadhan (Employers normally resort to sending their maids for good instead of giving them 1-2 months break - high risk)
- 1 month after Syawal (those who promised to return after Raya break ended up leaving for good)
- August (many employers recruit/legalise their housemaids during the last legalisation practise (PEMUTIHAN)back in August 2001)...mine included

So plan your time well so that you will not get stuck with "domestic" problem during Ramadhan (...so stressful..I know..)

I've been approached by Guest readers who claimed that they are the victims of unscrupulous Indonesian agents or middle person or free lance agents. I can only extend my heartiest sorry to hear the bad news. I can understand how such experience can be traumatic to some of you out there when your hard earned money (in the form of deposits) went off with your so-called agent. I can relate such experience to my own some 8 years ago which ironically turned myself to become a housemaid agent ! That's how I get started.

So please be very careful when dealing direct especially with Indonesian personel - be it at Indonesia or PR at Malaysia or any regular tourist.

I am calling out for any Guest readers who have such experiences to come forward and share what you have gone thru so that others can be aware and will not fall prey to those irresponsible people. Thank you for all your well wishes and doa for my safe delivery. Alhamdulillah, I have given birth to a beautiful baby boy on the 30th April 2008 , 8.12pm at An Nisaa' Maternity Clinic, Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Today is my 17th day of confinement.

I've been meaning to update this web as soon as I got back from the clinic but many things have been preventing me including poor internet connection. Infact up till now as I write, I couldn't get my laptop to access internet either via dial up or wireless. I guess I have to settle for direct internet access thru my 3G mobile phone. Can u imagine how hard it is to write long text on a very tiny keyboard. Therefore, I have to keep this posting very short and sassy...

I have come to a conclusion that cost increase in housemaid recruitment at this point in time is inevitable. Many requests for housemaid have been turned down due to the short supply of biodata/ profile and I don't feel good about it. My (only)Indonesian counterpart is not helping much in this. Therefore, I have to source out for other agencies and have to agree with their terms especially on the costing part.

After much deliberation, this is the reviewed housemaid costing effective by March 2008. Please email me (lehadwin@gmail.com) if you need further explaination on how I derived the cost.

This is to inform that I have recalled postings related to recruitment of housemaid from my supplier at Jawa Tengah. This is due to the fact that the agent FAIL to supply housemaids that conform to my expectations during probation period.

Please disregard postings such as :
1- cost breakdown - economy package 2 (deleted)
2- cost breakdown - comprehensive package

I will need sometime to clean up my web, however, I will still maintain the recruitment of known maid from the above mentioned supplier because it does not involve new recruitment / warranty / supplier's evaluation etc.

MULTIPLE ENTRY (HOUSEMAID ON LEAVE)

Dear Valued clients, non-clients and friends,

Thank you so much for the kind words that I received regarding this mini website. I am so deeply touched by your support and I hope my small effort will go a long way.

One of the common topics that has become an utmost concern from Malaysian employers is regarding procedure for multiple entry with a valid working permit. This procedure applies especially for housemaids going back home for a short break.

The question is :

1)What is the impact if the employer overlooked the above procedure?
- The maid may be suspended from leaving the Indonesian port of exit until a fiscal payment of IDR 1M being settled.
- The commotion at the airport may cause your maid to miss her flight
- The officer at the airport may also take advantage of your confused maid by confiscating her passport and demand higher payment for its release

2)What is the impact if the maid (intentionally or unintentionally) fail to return?
-Refer to my earlier posting on how to handle improper exit
-Employer will be imposed a RM250 fine and must be settled before hiring a replacement/new maid

Tips for risk management

a) If possible, plan your maid to take leave nearing her permit expiration. A lead time of 1-2 months is recommended. Proceed with renewal processes immediately upon her return.

b) Do not purchase her return ticket unless you are 120% sure that your maid will return. Air Asia ticket will only require confirmation number which can be communicated to your maid via sms/email/fax (don't forget to keep her Indonesian contact number)

c) Write a simple letter to Immigration mentioning that your maid is taking a short break for a duration of time and expected to return by certain date. Attach a copy of her ticket as proof. Take both documents to Immigration for endorsement. In the event that your maid fail to show up, these documents will be a valid proof that you have "properly" deported her and the Immigration may consider waiving the RM250 fine for that matter.

d) Hold RM250 from your maid's salary and refund upon her return.

HOUSEMAID TERMINATION PROCEDURE

Dear valued clients, non-clients and friends,

I've been approached regarding housemaid termination procedure by known and unknown callers so many times now that I think I have to post something to that effect. Unfortunately most of the callers realised that they have missed out this procedure upon submission of their new maids!!! There goes your RM250 for being ignorant.

Hence, here's the procedure again. Infact, I have posted the procedure in this blog the first time it came into existence, just click permit termination and you are there.

Please be reminded that, without the proper check out memo (C.O.M) you are still subject to the RM250 fine - for not deporting your maid according to the procedure (even if you have a sound proof that your maid has been properly deported)

Failing to apply for C.O.M may cause an adverse effect such as :

- you are not allowed to apply for your new maid until you settle the RM250 fine

- your ex-maid may have problem applying for new employment in Malaysia and/or other countries

-your ex-maid's name may be blacklisted by Indonesian Immigration for future employment for the "sin" done by her ex-employer

So please be a responsible employer and be updated with this employment procedure. Housemaid employment has been here for decades and the trend is here to stay, like it or not, we have to be in the know.

CADANGAN PAPA TIDAK MUNASABAH

PERSATUAN Agensi Pembantu Rumah Asing (Papa) mencadangkan setiap pengambilan pembantu rumah mestilah melalui agensi dan memansuhkan pengambilan secara individu. Alasan mereka, ada kes orang gaji yang diambil secara individu didera dan tidak mempunyai tempat pengaduan. Soalnya, berapa peratus kes penderaan membabitkan pembantu rumah persendirian berbanding melalui agensi? Saya sendiri mempunyai seorang pembantu rumah yang saya ambil secara sendiri dan setakat ini sudah hampir dua tahun tidak mempunyai apa-apa masalah. Kalau benar persatuan berkenaan hendak memansuhkan pengambilan secara persendirian, selaraskan nilai pembayaran bagi urusan itu.

Berbanding melalui agensi, pengambilan secara persendirian boleh berjimat sehingga RM2,000. Sanggupkah persatuan menurunkan pembayaran melalui agensi sebanyak itu?Bagaimana pula keadaannya dengan kebanyakan pembantu rumah melalui agensi yang melarikan diri? Masing-masing mempunyai pro dan kontranya.

Janganlah mengeksploitasi satu masalah dan menutup masalah lain. Jadi, saya tidak setuju jika permintaan persatuan diluluskan.Berkaitan insuran, memang dialu-alukan kerana ia saling membantu pembantu dan majikan sekiranya terjadi kejadian tidak diingini.Diharap kerajaan mengambil pandangan dari segala sudut dan janganlah undang-undang dilaksanakan bagi menguntungkan sebelah pihak saja.

Perlu diingat bahawa kebanyakan orang yang mengambil pembantu rumah ini adalah daripada golongan sederhana membabitkan suami isteri bekerja.Janganlah dibebani dengan penguatkuasaan pengambilan pembantu rumah melalui agensi yang mengenakan bayaran sehingga RM6,000 berbanding secara persendirian antara RM3,000 dan RM4,000 saja.

A lesson .. worth sharing....

“No, I don’t want this type of fries. I always had the crinkled-cut type here. Not this one!” complained the man sitting next to my table where I dined with a friend that day.

What? I couldn’t believe what I just overheard. Is this man for real?

I tried to focus on my conversation with my friend but my head was spinning in dizziness with the man’s outburst. He got upset for having to eat a differently-cut fries? Goodness, I was staggered with his ridiculousness and pettiness. How I wished he wasn’t so loud, I could have enjoyed my lunch!

Arguing about having to eat a differently-cut fries which has not even an iota of variation in its taste was appalling. Why must a person insist in making a mountain out of a small mole?

Truly, Richard Armour has said it wisely…In larger things we are convivial; what causes trouble is the trivial

And how trivial was the matter he pursued. I reflected on myself if I have ever been that way. Have I ever made things difficult for anyone unnecessarily? Have I ever become petty-focused in my daily dealings?

I remembered a lovely advice by beloved Prophet SAW…

"Anas reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Make things easy for people and do not make them difficult...." [Agreed upon]

Subhanallaah, we are asked to always make things easy for others. Take the easy way and avoid being a difficult, cranky, grumpy and an annoying person. It is a sunnah that we make things easy and by following it, we show that we love him.

I know I have to make a choice– Show my love for him by making my dealings with others simple and easy OR; I could choose to become the crinkled-cut fries-man!

Let me tell you a secret- with my number of young years I am at right now, I would avoid the word crinkle at any cost!
